Columbine Open Space

Located just south of Castle Rock along East Plum Creek, Columbine Open Space is a 368-acre property that offers easy loop trails, historic farm buildings, mature cottonwood groves, and scenic creekside views. Owned and managed by Douglas County’s Division of Open Space and Natural Resources, the open space provides a peaceful setting for families, casual hikers, wildlife watchers, and anyone looking for a relaxing outdoor escape close to town.

Recreation and Trails

Columbine Open Space features two easy loop trails, each approximately 1.5 miles long, that wind through open meadows, riparian habitat, and remnants of the property’s agricultural past. The wide crusher fines trails are open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, making the area accessible for visitors of all ages and experience levels. The trail system also connects directly to the Colorado Front Range Trail, allowing those looking for a longer adventure to continue south toward Greenland Open Space, Larkspur, Palmer Lake, and beyond. With minimal elevation gain and broad, well-maintained paths, Columbine Open Space is an excellent destination for leisurely walks, nature photography, and introducing children to the outdoors.

Wildlife and Scenery

East Plum Creek serves as the heart of Columbine Open Space, creating an important wildlife corridor that supports mule deer, elk, red foxes, hawks, songbirds, and a variety of other native species. Towering cottonwood trees provide welcome shade during the warmer months, while open grasslands offer expansive views of the surrounding foothills and Palmer Divide. Seasonal wildflowers brighten the landscape throughout spring and summer, and birdwatchers often find the creek corridor to be one of the property’s greatest attractions. Because portions of the open space provide habitat for the federally threatened Preble’s meadow jumping mouse, visitors are encouraged to remain on designated trails and respect all habitat protection measures.

History

Long before becoming a public open space, the Columbine property operated as a working farm and ranch that helped support the area’s agricultural heritage. Several historic structures remain near the trailhead, providing a glimpse into Douglas County’s ranching history and the families who once worked the land. Today, Douglas County has carefully preserved both the property’s natural ecosystems and its historic character, allowing visitors to experience a landscape where local history and conservation come together.
