Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space

Located in Castle Rock, Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space is now open to the public and stands as the largest open space acquisition in the town’s history, and one of the last large, undeveloped properties near town. Owned and managed by the Town of Castle Rock, the 681-acre property features rolling grasslands, mature mixed coniferous forest, exposed hoodoo rock formations, and dramatic canyon terrain carved by Willow Creek. Protected by a permanent conservation easement, the site opened to the public in 2026 following a multi-year acquisition and planning process, offering scenic beauty that echoes the adjacent Castlewood Canyon State Park. Dogs and biking are not permitted on trails anywhere on the property.

Recreation and Trails

Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space offers roughly 10 miles of hiking trails, with an additional 5 miles under construction and expected to open later this summer. The trail system features multiple color-coded loops connected by shorter linking trails, most rated moderate to difficult, with steep grades, rock steps, narrow passages, and cliff edges throughout. For an easier outing, Willow Creek Path from the Creekside Trailhead or Pronghorn Path from the Cattleman’s Trailhead offer more accessible routes. The Echoes of Ancestors Trail connects directly into neighboring Castlewood Canyon State Park for those looking to extend their hike. Due to the property’s conservation easement, biking is permitted on roadways only and is not allowed on hiking trails, and pets, including dogs and horses, are not permitted anywhere on the property.

Wildlife and Scenery

The property’s mix of grassland, ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest, and canyon terrain supports a rich diversity of wildlife, and visitors should watch for rattlesnakes and black bears while exploring. Steep canyon walls, sedimentary rock formations, and spring-fed side drainages give the landscape a rugged, dramatic character, while purple wildflowers brighten riparian areas along Willow Creek. The property’s exposed hoodoo formations and canyon cliffs offer sweeping scenic overlooks throughout the trail system.

History

Preserving open space has consistently ranked as a top community priority in Castle Rock, and Lost Canyon Ranch represented a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect a large, scenic, and ecologically significant property. The acquisition came together through a partnership between the Town of Castle Rock, Douglas County, The Conservation Fund, Great Outdoors Colorado, and Douglas Land Conservancy. Great Outdoors Colorado awarded a historic $3 million Centennial Grant toward the purchase in September 2023, the largest single funding allocation in town history, and Douglas County pledged $5.5 million toward the acquisition in April 2024. The Conservation Fund officially purchased the property in April 2024, placing a permanent conservation easement on the land through Douglas Land Conservancy before selling it to the Town the following month. The total acquisition cost was approximately $15 million. Following a master planning process led by Wenk and Associates and extensive community input, the Town began preparing the property for public access in fall 2025, opening it in phases beginning in 2026.
